Letter of Recommendation (Employer)

Intro

  • Brief description of the referees association with the candidate.
  • How long have you known the candidate and in what capacity.
  • Quote specific purpose for the recommendation. (Name the University applied for.)

Be sure to briefly justify/explain the incidents or circumstances upon which you base your opinions.


Para 2

  • Write about the professional experience of the candidate.
  • Mention specific occasions where you have worked together. Mention specific accomplishment/s of the candidate while working with you. (Along with listing the occasions, focus on the candidates role and performance)
  • You could make a comparison with a peer group.

(Your observations on the candidates' skills and knowledge, his style of working, specific areas of strength or special experiences.)


Para 3

  • Discuss any particular quality that you can relate to the subject the candidate has applied for. (leadership, organizational, teamwork skills, taking initiatives, ability in thinking out of the box, work ethics and/or maturity.) Justify with reference to instances where the candidate exhibited these qualities.

Para 4

  • If you have known the candidate over a longer period, write about the transformation of the candidate through the years. How the candidate has evolved.
  • Mention any exceptional characteristic that you observed in the candidate with reference to instances where the candidate exhibited that charcteristic.

Para 5

  • Write about proficiency in English (seminars, presentations, extracurricular events)
  • Describe the candidates interpersonal skills.
  • Personal characteristics such as confidence, dependability, patience, diligence, creativity, etc.
  • You could briefly discuss a weakness emphasising on how the candidate worked towards overcoming that.
  • Express your professional opinion as to how you think the candidate will be an asset to the university.

Conclusion

  • Why do you think the candidate has the aptitude for the particular course.
  • Write about the potential for succeeding in the choice of stream opted for.
  • Briefly sum up your professional observations.
  • Clearly state that you are recommending the candidate for the said course.

NOTE: Scholarships and financial aid is mostly merit based. Hence it is advised that the LoR should not be used to recommend financial aid for the student. The purpose of the LoR is to vouch for the student/candiate's professional/academic and personal qualities with credible examples.

  • Write about the academic performance of the candidate.
  • Mention specific occasions where you have worked together/studied under you.

(Along with listing the occasions, focus on the candidate's performance.)

  • Mention any accomplishment/s of the candidate while working with you

(The student may have some exceptional strengths such as a very high energy level or excellent communication skills / have a specific area of knowledge or experience such as a strong background in science, an undergraduate degree in another area or related work experience in education, a research project, coaching, extracurricular activities, ...)
